MPEG-5 Part 2 (LCEVC)

LCEVC specifies a data stream structure made up of two component streams, a base stream decodable by a hardware decoder, and an enhancement stream suitable for software processing implementation with sustainable power consumption. The enhancement stream provides new features, such as compression capability extension to existing codecs, lower encoding and decoding complexity. The standard works with on-demand and live streaming applications.

How it Works

LCEVC brings a new approach to video compression. It leverages a base video codec (e.g., AVC, HEVC, AV1, EVC and VVC) and employs a highly efficient and low complexity enhancement that adds up to two layers of encoded residuals that correct artefacts produced by the base video codec and add detail and sharpness for the final output video. By doing so, it improves video compression efficiency while maintaining or lowering the overall encoding and decoding complexity.

LCEVC: Encoding Complexity Benefits

LCEVC employs the base codec at a lower resolution and then uses highly efficient parallelized techniques to reconstruct the target resolution and apply residual details. The result is that LCEVC is significantly faster to encode than a native full resolution encode using the base codec as illustrated by the results of the MPEG working group tests below.
